SCLAHS Annual Meeting – October 10, 2024
The 2024 Annual Meeting of the Supreme Court of Louisiana Historical Society was held on Thursday, October 10 at the Petroleum Club in Lafayette. The guest speaker was former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice James T. “Jimmy” Genovese, who became the 21st President of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches on August 5, 2024. Justice/President Genovese gave a well-received professionalism presentation entitled “As the World Expands: Professionalism in the Age of Social Media, COVID, and Hurricanes,” which was offered for CLE credit. Born and raised in Opelousas, Justice/President Genovese earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern State in 1971 and a Juris Doctor from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 1974. After practicing law for 21 years as a trial attorney in south Louisiana, he was elected district judge of the Twenty-Seventh Judicial District Court for the Parish of St. Landry in 1995, serving through 2004, when he was elected to the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal. In 2016, he was elected Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, commencing his term on January 1, 2017.
