SCLAHS Annual Meeting and Justice Guidry’s CLE – September 12, 2025
The 2025 Annual Members Meeting of the Supreme Court of Louisiana Historical Society was held on September 12, 2025. Alan G. Brackett, John T. Olivier, and Harry J. “Skip” Philips, Jr. reported on the nine-month commemoration of the Bicentennial of the 1825 Louisiana Civil Code, culminating in a Closing Gala at the National World War II Museum on June 20, 2025. Their report concluded with a short film containing excerpts from the Society’s educational programs held around the state between October 2024 and June 2025. Professor Markus G. Puder, Herbert W. Christenberry Distinguished Professor of Law at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, and Hannah C. Daniel, Editor-in-Chief of the 2025-2026 Loyola Law Review, reported on law review’s plans to publish the Society’s 1825 Civil Code Bicentennial speeches and papers in an upcoming special issue. Phelps Gay, Board Chair of the Society, reported on upcoming CLE programs in November and December.
After the Annual Meeting, Associate Justice John Michael Guidry gave a stimulating and informative professionalism CLE on the Rules of Professional Conduct for the Louisiana Bar. Citing a “lawyer’s responsibilities” set forth in the preamble to the ABA Model Rules and the examples of professional misconduct listed in Louisiana Rule of Professional Conduct 8.4, Justice Guidry discussed recent disciplinary cases wherein Louisiana lawyers have fallen short. Justice Guidry concluded his remarks by saying that if practicing attorneys can take heed of the matters addressed in these and other disciplinary cases, they can enhance the integrity of the profession.
